Low Pressure of the SE US coast is now new Invest 95L. Disturbance is off-shore ESE of Hilton Head, SC…due South of Morehead City, NC. Some development possible as the Low drifts to the SOUTH. Initial models then recurve the Invest away from land. Hurricane Hunters out Thursday, if necessary. Full Discussion at Scott’s blog later this afternoon: http://www.midatlanticwx.com/blog.htm

From the NHC:
1150 AM CDT WED AUG 22 2007
THE CENTER OF HURRICANE DEAN MADE LANDFALL IN MEXICO NEAR THE TOWN OF TECOLUTLA…JUST EAST OF GUTIERREZ ZAMORA AND ABOUT 40 MILES SOUTH-SOUTHEAST OF TUXPAN AT ABOUT 1130 AM CDT…1630 UTC. THE ESTIMATED INTENSITY OF DEAN AT LANDFALL WAS 100 MPH…160 KPH….CATEGORY TWO ON THE SAFFIR-SIMPSON HURRICANE SCALE.
Our HurricaneCenter and other media outlets are providing great coverage of Dean (I exclude “TWC”…they have been out hustled by CNN and Fox…so much for The Hurricane Authority).
Invest 92L has not organized and resembles an open wave more than a closed Low Pressure area. It is still moving west and will bring clouds and showers to much of Florida…no development is anticipated.
The Canadian CMC model (the one that had Invest 92L a tropical storm landfalling FL on Thursday) is now ga-ga over a wave in the Central Atlantic…cranking it up by Friday east of the Lesser Antilles. Getting warm & tingly over the CMC is just not something we do here at Mid-Atlantic WX.com, but we’re always watching.

Dean will make landfall Tuesday morning however hurricane force winds will be moving in 3 hours earlier.
For a couple of technical reasons on these hurricane hunter recon flights, max flight level winds aren’t decreased by the usual percentages (email me if you want a detailed explaination). Dean is now a Category-5 hurricane.
Winds are 155MPH and officially still a Cat-4. In order to classify as a Category-5, winds must exceed 155MPH. Dean is still strengthening and confidence is high he’ll reach Cat-5 strength prior to landfall. Core temperature shown in VDM continues to warm…usually a sign of intensification. Landfall on the Yucatan mid-morning Tuesday but strong winds and rain are now approaching.
BTW, Fox News is streaming several Hurricane Dean video clips on their web site…not full time right now but good coverage: http://www.foxnews.com. Click “VIDEO” under the Dean lead story headline.
Down to 918 mb (ties lowest thus far). Winds 150MPH/Gusting 185MPH, moving west @ 17 knots.
